Waking in the morning to a lovely sunny day is a wonderful feeling, but as autumn arrives, sometimes we need a bit of a help to get that same feeling. Why not start your day with a series of poses called Surya Namaskar, the Sun Salutation, to help promote a feeling of energy, mixed with a sense of calm and focus. Surya Namaskar is also good to use as part of your warm up or cool down, whether running, paddling, boarding, climbing, gardening…

The series of poses helps increase the heart rate and incorporates poses which will strengthen and lengthen the core, strengthen the lower back, open the hip flexors, lengthen the hamstrings and help increase flexibility.

There are a number of variations in performing Surya Namaskar. Variations can be found on the internet, e.g. EkhartYoga on YouTube show 3 variations. Yoga and Pilates are both excellent activities in their own right and also as an addition to a training regime for other activities. As with all exercises and stretches, it is essential that these poses are performed carefully so that the body is in the correct alignment and no injuries are caused. Attending a Yoga or Pilates class will help you to learn the poses correctly. Feel free to ask for help in finding a class.
